Alice Ghostley: the lost tearaway

April 18, 2014

‘What’s so freakin’ funny?’ Film and Broadway actress Alice Ghostley died in 2007, aged 81. She was a star, best known in middle age as Esmeralda of ‘Bewitched’. Earlier, Alice was the delinquent drifter of American tv dramas. Her big film was ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, 1962, as the truculent, abused accuser, who gives the arch Gregory Peck a feral telling off (wouldnt you). Her erratic and impulsive characters had a touch of the Janis Joplins.
